A husband is a handy thing

It's almost Friday and time for another weekend but I think I'm still recovering from last weekend!  My wonderful husband (who drives 18 wheelers and is out of town more often than not) had 5 days of vacation.  I tried to be considerate and have less than 10 items on his Honey-Do list.  Luckily, he's a trooper and didn't mind the grocery store list, cleaning list, laundry list, etc. that I handed to him.

Over the weekend we defined the flower beds we want to put in around the front of the house.  We widened the side bed and outlined curved beds for the front.  We then weeded the side bed and started on the front.  After thinking about what steps we wanted to take to complete the beds we decided to leave it for another weekend.

The most important item that I wanted him to complete was the sanding of the bathroom cabinets.  He split it into two days and it's now ready for me to stain - just in time for him to leave.  If you ask me, I think he planned it this way!

On Monday, he removed the doors, drawers, and hardware.  He sanded the facing in the bathroom (and cleaned up!) by the time I got home from work on Monday.  Tuesday he sanded the doors and drawers.

So, it looks like I have a hot date this weekend - with a stain brush and cabinetry.

Bathroom updates

Well the dogs woke me up at 8:20, so I didn't get to sleep in as I'd hoped.  However, it was a good motivator to start painting the bathroom!  I completed the painting in 2 hours and drove into town to Kirklands to look at mirrors.  I ended up going for one large mirror with a bronze frame (after much debate!).

All in all, I think it looks great!  I'm currently staining the cabinets but have taken a break because a friend is coming for dinner!'

Hello World!

Just let me get this out there first - I like starting in the middle.  Who needs a preamble?  Not I!  Is Chapter 1 really all that interesting?  NO!  Who needs background story?  No one...oh wait, maybe you do!

My husband, Jeff, and I purchased our first home, a 1200 square foot home on two acres outside of Austin, Texas in December 2010.  We moved to Austin from St. John, US VI with two dogs, no jobs, no car, and no real connections (aside from my mother and one of my four brothers).  My mom graciously offered us a place to live.  And so we lived there for two years while we got our feet wet and found a house.  We were both tired of paying rent and it was the perfect time to purchase a house - the right house.

Enter our house.  A two bedroom, two bathroom home that sits on two acres about 20 miles from downtown Austin.  The neighborhood is quite and a breeze is always blowing.  There is a wraparound porch and a dilapidated chicken coop, which I jokingly call Shiner's kennel (our male Rhodesian Ridgeback).  The house is sturdy and charming if not somewhat behind the times.  Only 16 years old, the pink tile and white walls and carpet are accentuated with brass everything.  Brass door knobs, fixtures, and lighting/fans.  The cabinets and wood throughout the house are pale and the door pulls are white with hand painted detailing: a cabin scene in the kitchen and flowers in the bathrooms.  The bathroom countertops have sinks that are shaped like sea shells.  The outside is painted a buttercream white with dark brown trim.  The yard hasn't a single flower or ornamental detail.  All things considered, it's screaming for a little love.

Our first task was deciding what color to paint the walls.  Jeff is living with patches of paint on the walls and hasn't complained!  What a man, what a man.  I tackled the bedroom first, one wall in the living room, and recently managed to paint the downstairs hallway.  Which is where my first post picks up...

Just a little last minute project

Like most of my projects, I didn't really plan today's activities. I had a busy day planned driving to Houston for a baby shower of the matron of honor at my wedding. After the shower, I jumped in the car and drove back home hoping to hit the house around 5:30.

On the way home I was looking at country houses pondering the green I had picked out for the house (when Jeff lets me convince him to paint the exterior) and decided green might not be the color! I immediately called him and said, "honey, I don't like green. I'm thinking of grey or blue." Jeff responded, "keep right on thinking." Classic.

From exterior paint my mind made the easy leap to the white walls of our master bathroom. I've been saying that I was going to paint it and even bought the paint several weeks ago, but never actually began painting. I decided, today was the day. Or rather, tonight was the night. My brother, who is currently living with me, helped me remove the bathroom mirror. Josh removed the screws to the clasps at the top of the mirror and it came right off! Two little screws (not even into studs) were the only things holding the mirror to the wall. Amazing. There was a random hole about 1 inch in diameter behind the mirror which will require patching. So, short story long, we ran to Home Depot to grab some drywall patch materials, texture, stain, and sand paper. I got home and started prepping for tomorrow's painting.

Overview of the Master Bathroom - Phase 1:
  • Remove towel bars (all four non-matching)
  • Remove wood 2x4 with toilet paper holder
  • Repair walls with drywall patch and texture
  • Paint Reinstall mirror (or if we find cheap framed mirrors at the outlet malls tomorrow replace)
  • Sand and stain cabinets

Here are some pictures of the action.
